Our Engineering Phases
What We Do In The Process
First of all, we will collect every available data and information from the designers. We will create assumptions about the location attributes, function loads, and seismic loads. Then we will make initial recommendations about test and measurements that needed to be done.
During this phase of the structural engineering process, we will take the information we’ve gathered and creating layout of the foundations, columns, beams, and slabs.
We will also attach a rough dimension of the structure elements incorporating span and safety factors. You will also have the opportunity to request any modifications you’d like us to make to your preferred design. Once you have selected a design option that best suits your needs, we will begin the process of refining the design during the Design Development phase.
At this stage we will continue from the approved schematic design. We will calculate and make simulations of the structure system. Then we will adjust the dimension, rebar, and reinforcement of the structures to meet the project needs in the most efficient way.
By now, we will have settled on a final design and will begin preparing drawings, notes, and technical specifications necessary for bidding, construction, and permit application. This is the phase that many people think of when they picture the work of an engineers – the creation of blueprints.
Contractors will use these detailed drawings and specifications to prepare for the next phase in the building process.
At the end of the phase the documents from the schematic design and design development phases should be updated in full detail. Additional documents will also be created and can vary depending on the scope of the project. A completed construction document set is highly technical and extensive and may include:
- Structural Foundation Plans: Drawings of each floor showing the dimension and locations of the foundation.
- Structural Column and Wall Plans: Drawings of each floor showing the dimension and locations of the columns.
- Slab and Beam System Plans: Drawings of each floor showing the elevation, dimensions and location of the beam systems and slabs.
- Key Details and Sections: Large scale drawings of every type of specific structural elements within the project.
- Simulation and Loads Report: Documents of calculation and simulation of the structure system, shown that the calculation meets the project criterias and building codes.
Having an engineer on your side during the bidding phase of home construction is of great advantage to you. At minimum, we can aid you in developing a list of qualified contractors for your bid list and submitting bid packages to bidders. But we can also review submitted bids, provide analysis, and help you compare the cost figures that you receive from your bidders.
This phase will ensure the contractors you are considering for your construction project are reading the blueprints correctly and are providing an accurate bid for your project.
Finally, once you have selected a contractor and construction is under way, we move into the sixth phase of the building process – construction administration. During this phase, we will administer the construction process to assure conformance with design intent, visit the site during construction, and address any field conditions as they arise.
